The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) at the University of Pittsburgh, strives to assure that each member organization cooperatively works together, while maintaining their own identity; to promote awareness and unity among the historically black Greeks and embracing a service-oriented philosophy; as well as promoting the continuance of social action, political involvement, and economic development.

NPHC was chartered at the University of Pittsburgh on December 7, 1996. The stated purpose and mission of the organization is, "unanimity" of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations.

NPHC does not participate in recruitment/rush with the Panhellenic or the Interfraternity Council's. Their form of recruitment is better known as intake. The intake process might begin in the spring semester for some chapters or in the fall for others; however, do not be surprised if you are a freshman and you are not invited to an informational meeting during your freshman year. Some chapters require that one full year of academics be completed before they discuss the membership intake process.

Generally, the actual intake process begins with an informational meeting. At the informational meeting, students are invited to learn more about a specific chapter and the specifics of the application process for that chapter. After the applications have been approved, the membership education program begins.  There are three important components in the membership intake process: (1) a pre-induction/orientation period, (2) the final induction ceremony, and (3) an in-depth education program.  The final pledge of oath of allegiance taken by a candidate from which he/she cannot withdraw is a lifetime commitment.  Each organization has its own ritual ceremony, but all basically have the objective that this rite is intended to be impressive.

Each affiliate chapter implements the guidelines and details of its own membership intake process, so the length of the specific programs may vary.  In addition to the time-frame requirement, there are other requirements for intake:

  • Each chapter must file a list of intended candidates with the Fraternity & Sorority Life Advisor immediately following any informational meetings.
  • No chapter shall intake members prior to meeting the requirements of the college/university and its national organization.
  • No intake shall be held without the presence of at least one graduate chapter and/or advisor.
  • HAZING in any form, including physical and mental abuse is prohibited and will not be tolerated.
  • No person who has resigned from one sorority or fraternity may hold membership in any other organization in the NPHC.
  • Each chapter determines its own rules governing membership in other Greek-letter organizations, which are non-members of the NPHC.
  • Each chapter has a grade point average and credits earned requirement.
