Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of joining a Fraternity/Sorority?

Becoming a member of a fraternity/sorority allows students to experience brotherhood/sisterhood , service opportunities, leadership positions and development training, social outlets, academic support, lifelong friendships, career networking, and a bond that will tie the student to the University of Pittsburgh and the community long after their days as undergraduate members.

Are Fraternities/Sororities really like the stereotypes portrayed in the movies?

Fraternity and sorority members are often characterized as elitist, party organizations by the media and movies such as "Animal House," but in reality fraternities and sororities are based upon values, strong bonds of friendship, and a lifelong dedication to service, the community, and one another.

What are the financial obligations of joining a fraternity or sorority?

Each organization is responsible for self sustaining its operations and chapter events through membership dues, therefore financial obligations vary from chapter to chapter. The first semester is usually slightly higher due to a one time initiation fee. Please encourage your son/daughter to ask particular chapters for a break down of dues and financial obligations prior to joining. It is important to note that a majority of the chapters of payment plans and scholarship options available for students in an effort to support our members as much as possible during their experience at the University of Pittsburgh and the Greek System
